ANZSJA: The Australian and New Zealand Society of Jungian Analysts

Invites you to the fifth in our current series of ongoing, professional development lectures for clinical practitioners and trainees in Sydney

Transference and Countertransference: the Essentials

Speaker: John Merchant (ANZSJA, Sydney)

One of Jung’s critical insights stemmed from his realisation that in any human encounter the psyches of the participants influence each other mutually. These dynamics are especially important in psychotherapy and in the therapy relationship have been given the technical names ‘transference’ and ‘countertransference’ when they occur in that context.

In contrast to many of his colleagues, Jung also realised that any countertransferential effect on the therapist by the client does not have to be seen as a neurotic problem but can be an important means of communication about the patient’s unconscious dynamics and can provide valuable material for use in the psychotherapeutic process even if it can, at times, be challenging for the therapist.

This lecture will explain transference and countertransference by looking at the history and development of these concepts while also outlining how Jung came to see the countertransference as a potentially positive phenomenon with an important role to play in the therapeutic process. Since the Jungian tradition both understands and is supportive of this way of working, the aim of this lecture is to help therapists think about their own countertransferential experiences, what communications they might contain and what clinical uses could be made of them. These themes will be explored further in the workshop components of the next day’s seminar.

Speaker: John Merchant (Sydney, NSW).
John trained with the Australian and New Zealand Society of Jungian Analysts and is currently in private practice as an Analyst and Consultant Psychologist. Over the last decade he has run a number of courses on analytical psychology through the Centre for Continuing Education at the University of Sydney. His recent book Shamans and Analysts: New Insights on the Wounded Healer (Routledge 2011) examines the archaic archetypal pattern underpinning the work of native healers and how this is reflected in modern psychotherapy.

Jungian Analysis: The Nature of the Psyche and Processes of Therapeutic Change

Seminar Leaders: John Merchant (ANZSJA, Sydney) and Andrew Gresham (ANZSJA, Christchurch)

The seminar will examine the role of the therapeutic relationship in clinical work, focusing on Jung’s observation that the clinician cannot influence their client unless they are available to be influenced by the client. Destructive patterns of behaviour, which often evoke strong negative reactions in the therapist, will be discussed using Jungian and post-Jungian understandings of psychological processes and structures.

The day’s presentations and discussions will be grounded in clinical examples drawn from a wide spectrum of presenting issues. The seminar is open to clinicians of any background regardless of whether or not they are familiar with Jung’s work and seminar attendees are invited to bring confidential clinical examples for discussion.
